A couple of days ago I got back from the south of the Netherlands, where I and a couple friends were camping. Photos can be found here. Tomorrow morning I’m traveling to Latvia again. However, this time the travel won’t be as nasty as last time (at least, if everything goes well). I’m leaving aroundContinue reading “Back and Off Again”

Zef.Nu, NetNewsWire and MarsEdit
Because I’m going to be away from my family and friends a lot in the next year (at least) I’ve set up another weblog (in Dutch) at Zef.Nu. There I’ll post personal stuff, stories and pictures. So if you’re interested and (think you) can read Dutch, feel free to visit Zef.Nu from time to time.Continue reading “Zef.Nu, NetNewsWire and MarsEdit”
Quality Attributes of Distributed Storage Systems
I just finished my almost last assignment for my current university before the holidays and before I got to Trinity College. It’s an essay for the software architecture course I took. I thought I’d put it online for those interested. It’s not a masterpiece, but it should do for the credits I get for itContinue reading “Quality Attributes of Distributed Storage Systems”
New Camera and Flickr
A week or so ago I bought my first own digital camera. It’s a “HP Photosmart R707”:http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?storeName=storefronts&landing=storefronts&category=digital_cameras&subcat1=six_mp&catLevel=2&product_code=Q2232A%23ABA and so far I like it very much. It works perfectly with my iBook, which is important because that’s going to be my main computer for the next year in Ireland. This is what it looks like: ItContinue reading “New Camera and Flickr”
London Attacks
You undoubtly heard all about this, but London has been attacked by terrorists. There are dozens of injuries. As of now 2 deaths confirmed, but at the very least 10 deaths at Kings cross. I recommed watching sites like “BBC News”:http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and “CNN”:http://www.cnn.com for the next hours. It’s strange to see places where I’ve beenContinue reading “London Attacks”
YaBB Turned 5 Yesterday
Yesterday, at July 4th (yah, I know), YaBB turned 5 years old. I think it’s the second oldest free bulletin board software project alive today. I went to visit the “YaBB community forums”:http://www.yabbforum.com/community/YaBB.pl yesterday and it looked kinda dead. They even seemed to have forgotten their birthday themselves. There seem to be some releases fromContinue reading “YaBB Turned 5 Yesterday”
Latvian Tales, Part 3
At saturday it’s time for me to see some Latvian sights. We go to a place that, if I remember correctly, is called Segunda. There they have caves with very old inscriptions: Nearby we also walked around through the beautiful nature and forest. It was beautiful, but once again also hot and humid. Which means…Continue reading “Latvian Tales, Part 3”
Latvian Tales, Part 2
For a west-european, life in Latvia is extremely cheap. In Latvia you pay with lats, 1 lat is worth a little over a British pound. One time we went to a restaurant to eat dinner, and including drinks it costed 4 lats (for two people), that’s little over 6 euros. In Holland you’d pay aroundContinue reading “Latvian Tales, Part 2”
Latvian Tales, Part I
It’s June 18th when I leave Groningen to go to visit a friend in Latvia, a country where I have never been. Because the cheapest way to get there is first to travel to Berlin (Germany) and then fly from Berlin to Riga (Latvia), I take the train to Berlin first. All in all thisContinue reading “Latvian Tales, Part I”
I Got In!
I received a letter telling me that I got accepted to Trinity College, Dublin (Ireland)! I’ll be doing the Networks and Distributed Systems master programme there. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about. I wrote an “entry about this almost a year ago”:http://www.zefhemel.com/archives/2004/08/20/trinity-college. I’m so happy, you cannot believe! PS: Due toContinue reading “I Got In!”
