Funny. I have been a heavy emacs user the past months at my job (and not because everybody else is using it, they're not) and it's been quite great. During my recent formatting on my laptop to make more room for my Linux installation (I only Linux installed on my Macbook now) I accidentally removed my .emacs file (which contains all the customizations) and I realized how depentent I am on that. It took me months to customize emacs to my liking. And it was all gone. What now? For now I switched back to Vim, which does mostly what I want without any customization. When searching around a bit I found that Tim O'Reilly had the same experience. He's a vim user now because of that. Let's see how things will go with me.
